COMPRESSOR OR 3-WAY REFRIGERATOR?

Three-way refrigerators and compressor refrigerators are two types of refrigerators commonly used in RVs or boats.

Here are some detailed differences between them:

  • Cooling mechanism: Three-way refrigerators use a process called 'absorption', which relies on the extraction of heat to produce cooling. This process involves a mixture of ammonia, hydrogen and water, which is heated by a propane burner or an electrical element. Compressor refrigerators for RVs, on the other hand, use a mechanical compressor to compress and expand a refrigerant gas, which absorbs and releases heat.
  • Power Sources: Three-way refrigerators are powered by propane gas, electricity, or batteries. They are designed to run on propane when the RV is stationary and on electricity or battery when it is moving or connected to an external source. Compressor refrigerators, on the other hand, can be powered by electricity, battery or solar energy. They usually require more energy than three-way refrigerators need to operate, although the latest models now have low consumption levels.
  • Efficiency and durability: the trivalents, running on propane, have a very long life. However, it must be remembered that in the event of a cooling system failure, repairs are never convenient. Additionally, the more complex construction makes them more fragile.
  • However, three-way refrigerators can take longer to cool and are generally less efficient in hot summers.
  • Noise: Three-way refrigerators are generally quieter than compressor refrigerators. They may only make a little noise when the propane burner or electric element is running. Compressor refrigerators are generally noisier when the compressor is running.
  • Size and weight: Three-way refrigerators are generally lighter than compressor refrigerators, which can be an advantage in some situations.

FINALIZING

In summary, three-way refrigerators are generally quieter, but can take longer to cool and also require a specialized technician for assembly. Compressor refrigerators are more powerful and faster but can be noisier.

Our personal choice? From experience, those who test the compressor do not change for the trivalent; vice versa, those who regret the trivalent are numerous. We therefore recommend a compressor refrigerator.
