RV REFRIGERATORS FOR CAMPERS

GUIDE AND ADVICE TO REFRIGERATORS FOR CAMPERS

There is no refrigerator suitable for every situation. Every cooling technology, like everything, has its pros and cons. Your purchasing decision will not only depend on the type and size of your vehicle, but also on your favorite travel destinations and your family's habits. In this short guide we will provide you with all the information you need so that you can choose wisely.

We'll answer questions like: What's the difference between an RV refrigerator and a residential refrigerator? Can a domestic refrigerator be used in a camper? What are the pros and cons of a residential refrigerator in an RV?

RV OR HOME REFRIGERATOR?

Thanks to the evolution of solar panels and low-cost batteries available for campers and vans, more and more people are installing a compressor fridge in their mobile homes, gaining in safety and performance.
The manufacturers of refrigerators for campers are focusing on this technology, the most popular, given the performance, power and consumption much lower than other technologies. And here the customer wonders: but if it's a compressor fridge, why can't I use a domestic fridge in my van?
The owner of the camper does the math, sees that the domestic refrigerator costs less and installs it in place of the old one in his camper.

Well. But then, why are there compressor refrigerators specifically designed for motorhomes? There is a reason! Indeed, more than one. Let's discover them together.

REFRIGERATION TECHNOLOGY
Both the home refrigerator and the RV refrigerator have a compressor to cool the interior, but what kind of compressor? From the website of one of the largest compressor manufacturers in the world, SECOP, you can immediately notice the huge variety of refrigerant compressors on the market.
There are compressors for stable refrigerators, for domestic refrigerators, for restaurants, ice cream parlors, compressors dedicated to the automotive industry, for portable refrigerators, medical refrigerators, condensing compressors, etc. Each has its own specific characteristics and are designed to be more efficient and longer lasting, considering the use that will be made of them.

PERFORMANCE
A domestic refrigerator will be less suitable for the high heat that can be created inside the camper or van, under the sun or simply with high outside temperatures, because it was designed to be in a domestic environment. Furthermore, the position and conformation of the compressor will not facilitate the exchange of air and it will be necessary to leave a greater space between the refrigerator and the wall, losing precious space, or to add cooling fans, also because, due to the way it is designed, a domestic compressor has need a lot more ventilation.

CONSUMPTION
Compressors for campers/vans are designed to consume as little consumption as possible and safeguard the energy independence of travellers.
The latest generation compressors are equipped with new electronics that allow the motor to operate at variable speed. Therefore, they are not only switched on or off, working at 0% or 100%, but thanks to an algorithm they can vary the power required to maintain the internal temperature and, usually working between 30 and 50% of their possibilities, consume a lot less energy.
For example, the new 70-litre SLIM 70 model by IndelB consumes just 0.290 kWh in 24h, with an absorption of 38 Watts.
Some latest generation domestic refrigerators could consume even less, but it must be considered that domestic ones are built without thinking about the space used; they can be equipped with thick layers of insulation, which save electricity, but which will take up precious space inside your camper without remorse.
Some travellers, wherever possible, subsequently install insulation boards around RV fridges, but be careful! Be very careful not to block the air recirculation (in the manual you will find all the information for correct installation). These stratagems are in our opinion now useless; the low consumption of the refrigerators and the high efficiency of solar panels and batteries make excessive energy saving measures superfluous.

SAFETY
Refrigerators used in campers must absorb shocks and vibrations; being designed for these accidents makes them last longer, without loss of performance or damage.
They are also equipped with small details that are usually not thought of during the purchase, such as the handle lock. During travel, the domestic refrigerator door may open unnecessarily because it is not designed to withstand the forces coming from bends or tilts of the motorhome.

COMFORT
Both types of refrigerators are equipped with a compressor and, during operation, a humming noise will inevitably be heard. However, travel refrigerators are designed and built to disturb as little as possible, bearing in mind that they will probably be located near the sleeping area.
Compressors for campers are internally equipped with micro silencers and the electronics work so that the compressor is active as little as possible. Furthermore, the refrigeration power can be adjusted and lowered before night time and the new models have the 'night' function: with a simple touch you will be able to sleep without buzzing and discomfort.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

In short, can I use a domestic refrigerator on the motorhome?
Yes, you can use your normal home fridge in a camper, but there are many disadvantageous factors to consider before making this choice; think well about your needs and how your trip will be before making any choice, you will be more satisfied with your purchase over the years.

In short, what are the characteristics that a compressor for campers must have?
Refrigerators used in campers must absorb shocks and vibrations; they have to be careful about consumption; be able to function without damage even with different slopes; be equipped with accessories, such as the handle block, to be safer during travel; make as little noise as possible, so as not to disturb during the night; withstand strong heat waves; refrigerate despite the high ambient temperature; do not require particular air changes.

In comfort, what are the advantages of a refrigerator for campers, vans?
Given their use in confined spaces and used by people with an on-the-road lifestyle, RV refrigerators are equipped with particular devices, such as: modular internal accessories; openable grates and shelves (for vertical bottles); volume of the freezer cell well balanced with the fridge area; modular, removable freezer (Dometic models); if necessary, available with drawer door (CRD 50); measures suitable for the spaces of a camper; design and aesthetics designed to enhance automotive spaces.

Are DOMETIC or INDELB refrigerators better?
As far as power, safety and consumption are concerned, the two manufacturers are equivalent, both working with the best compressors. What will make you choose between Dometic or IndelB are the different standard accessories of the models, the sizes and the aesthetics of the refrigerators.

Fridges won't fit through my door, what can I do?
This is not such a rare problem, especially in caravans and some motorhomes. All models of refrigerators for campers are already, in general, less wide than a domestic refrigerator, but there are some models specifically designed to pass through the narrow doors of caravans, such as the CRUISE 86 which, despite having an internal capacity of 85 liters, is narrow only 380 mm.

ADVICE
However, if you prefer to equip yourself with a domestic refrigerator, here are some tricks you can think of:

- Get a safety lock for the door to prevent the fridge from opening suddenly when cornering.
- Pay attention to the power of the inverter: from the characteristics, does the refrigerator absorb around 65 watts? Maybe, but during ignition it may need even 10 times as much power as indicated. So think about the peak power of your inverter when you plug in the fridge.
- Check the ventilation space behind the refrigerator carefully and, if necessary, buy additional fans to circulate the air better.
- Think of a possible anti-vibration mat and installing sound-absorbing panels on the walls around the fridge.
- Check the climatic class of the refrigerator, high temperatures can be reached in campers and the refrigerator could consume much more than expected or break down.

IN DETAIL: THE COMPRESSORS USED IN RV REFRIGERATORS

THE DIFFERENCES IN DETAIL OF A COMPRESSOR FOR CAMPER VAN

As we have already mentioned above, there are specific compressors for many applications. We present the characteristics of compressors dedicated to 'mobile cooling', i.e. compressors that have been designed for use on the move, on buses, trucks, cars, ships, boats, etc.

Known as Danfoss compressors, Secop is one of the founding fathers of modern compressor technology and the models we offer you use these high quality products.

One of the most used compressors in the RV and marine industry is the Danfoss BD35F compressor or the BD50F (a larger version of the BD35F). The BD35F is one of the most used compressors and with unbeatable performance, in circulation for 20 years it can prove a long-lasting like few others.
Other types of compressors, installed on special models, have more or less the same characteristics and differ in structure, size and power. For example, some models have a remote compressor or need greater power given the larger size of the refrigerator.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
The Danfoss BD35F is a brushless, variable speed, hermetically sealed compressor. Key features of this revolutionary compressor include fast cooling, low current draw and quiet operation. In addition, they require less ventilation than compressors for domestic refrigerators, therefore more suitable for the narrow spaces of campers and vans.

WORK CYCLES
The Danfoss compressor works in what are called duty cycles. These cycles can reach 100% on startup or 0% at night when the refrigerator door is not opened. However, such extremes are rare. Typically, 30 to 50 percent duty cycles during daylight hours are the norm since the refrigerator works only to maintain temperature. Thanks to this versatility, the compressor consumes less energy than a normal household compressor.

SLOPE
The Danfoss compressor refrigerator can operate on a 30 degree incline without risk of damage, a key feature when traveling but also when stationary; it is very difficult for a pitch or perfect place in front of the sea to be perfectly level.

From Secop official site:
The electronics automatically adapt the compressor capacity (AEO) to the actual load of the refrigeration system. The algorithm will adjust the speed of the compressor to obtain an operating time of approximately 30 minutes. This is the most energy efficient way to operate the compressor. The BD.14F-VSD and BD35F/BD50F (with second generation electronic unit 101N0212) offer an ECO function which optimally adapts the compressor speed. It has additional features such as fan speed control, built-in electronic thermostat, communication interface that simplifies controller programming, no resistors, and additional wiring.
...include battery overcharge and discharge protection. The unit also features internal voltage logging and applied voltage calibration (compressor monitoring).'

ATTENTION: the characteristics of the compressor are not the characteristics of the refrigerator; it is then up to the manufacturer of the fridge whether, for example, to add an adjustable fan. Check the specifications of each product well before buying it.

From the Secop website, you can check the maximum current draw of the compressors, but ATTENTION! The reported value does not take into account the various components of the refrigerator, which require power to operate, such as the condenser fan and light.

FOR EVERY VEHICLE AND BOAT
BD compressors can be used in bus, car, boat. They are unbeatable when it comes to tolerating changing weather conditions and vibrations in difficult road conditions. A robust design allows it to withstand vibrations, violent shocks and rough seas even in boats of all kinds.
